Full Analysis of Advantages of Open-type, Silent-type, Containerized and Trailer-type Diesel Generator Sets

Time:10.08.2026 丨Industry News

As critical power supply equipment, diesel generator sets play a vital role in numerous industries. Based on different application scenarios and requirements, multiple types have been developed, including open-type, silent-type, container-type and trailer-type. The characteristics of each type are analyzed in detail below.

Open Type

With wide applicability, open-type diesel and natural gas generator sets are widely adopted as prime or standby power sources in telecommunications, hotels, commercial buildings, entertainment venues, hospitals, shopping malls, industrial and mining industries.

Structural Features

Power & Design: It covers a wide power range and features a compact structure with a universal chassis. The unit delivers low vibration and humanized design for easy operation.

Layout Configuration: Viewed from the generator drive end, the control cabinet is on the right and the output cabinet (standard bottom cable outlet) on the left. The rational layout facilitates cable connection and equipment maintenance.

Installation Design: The battery pack is integrally mounted on the unit to save space and simplify management. Multiple chassis options are available; mounting feet are provided in elastic connection and rigid connection versions. Chassis tanks can be configured with or without built-in fuel tanks for flexible selection according to actual demands.

Silent Type

Equipped with multiple noise control devices, silent-type diesel and natural gas generator sets can effectively reduce noise by 15–35 decibels to realize quiet operation without interfering with daily activities. They are ideal for noise-sensitive locations such as residential areas and offices.

Performance Features

Power & Fuel Tank: Power range covers 7–520 kW, fitted with fuel tanks supporting 6–12 hours continuous operation to meet varying power duration demands. It adopts modular assembly design with professional structural design and color scheme, balancing reliable performance and attractive appearance.

Noise Control: The noise level is controlled within 55–85 dBA at a distance of 7 meters. It uses an in-house built-in muffler. The standard cooling air duct adopts side air intake and top air exhaust design to reduce noise while maintaining efficient heat dissipation.

Protection Performance: Protection class reaches IP23 / IP43. It applies C4 powder coating system with a nominal film thickness of 60 μm for black coating and 80 μm for other colors, offering excellent corrosion resistance and extending service life.

Operational Convenience: Lifting lugs and rope fasteners are installed on the top of the enclosure. The chassis is reserved with fork pockets, towing holes and mounting holes, supporting towing, lifting and forklifting for easy relocation and installation at various sites.

Container Type

Containerized generator sets feature outstanding silencing performance, particularly suitable for night operation and noise-restricted areas such as residential districts and offices. With rainproof and dustproof properties, they can operate stably in harsh environments including construction sites, large buildings, airports, ports, offshore platforms, mines and deserts.

Performance Highlights

Power & Specifications: Power range covers 520–2000 kW. Containerized gensets are standardized, available in 20ft and 40ft high cube containers, equipped with 1000 / 2000 L fuel tanks to satisfy high-power, long-duration power demands.

Noise & Cooling: Noise level ranges from 75–88 dBA at 7 meters. External muffler is preferred. The standard cooling duct adopts side intake and end exhaust to maintain low noise and good heat dissipation during operation.

Protection & Structure: Protection class reaches IP23 / IP54. It uses C4 coating system with nominal film thickness of 120 μm for superior corrosion resistance. Options include 40ft 3-meter cabinet, 3.2-meter cabinet and one-and-half-height containers. The design achieves lower noise and more reasonable maintenance space, compatible with complex fuel, electrical and fire protection systems. Environmental factors are fully considered: at ambient temperature of 40°C, with a 10°C temperature rise inside the container, the radiator front can accommodate 50°C inlet air without excessive water temperature, ensuring stable unit operation under high-temperature conditions.

Trailer Type

Boasting flexible mobility, trailer-type diesel generator sets adapt to all-weather and various environments. They are widely used in scenarios requiring frequently movable power supply.

Structure & Applicability

Structure Classification: Divided into integrated type and split type. Both designs have respective advantages to maximize space utilization and improve adaptability under different environments.

Split Type Features: The split type consists of the generator unit and trailer assembly, generally applied for units below 200 kW. If the overall height exceeds 2550 mm or the control panel is too high to facilitate operation and maintenance during design, alternative structural forms shall be considered.

Integrated Type Advantages: The unit chassis and trailer chassis are manufactured as an integrated structure. For units above 200 kW, the integrated trailer reduces overall vehicle height, cutting transportation costs and improving transport efficiency.

Different types of diesel generator sets have their unique characteristics. Users can select the most suitable model according to practical application scenarios, power requirements, noise limits and mobility to meet power supply demands.
